An Interview with Prof. Avi Saguy
Rabbi Chaim Hirschensohn (1857, Safed - 1935, U.S.). received his rabbinic ordination from rabbis in Jerusalem and Russia, and served in the rabbinate for tens of years in Eretz Yisrael, Turkey, and the United States (New Jersey). A religious Zionist leader, he wrote dozens of articles and books of Torah learning, several of which are still in manuscript form. They include works on Jewish Law, Talmud, philosophy, Bible and its commentaries, Jewish history, education, and even a commentary on the Passover Haggadah. His writing, largely forgotten until now, provide the foundations for religious Zionism that contains the principles of human dignity and respect for all. The following excerpts are from the work "HaTorah V’HaChaim," edited by Dr. Yechezkel Cohen, published by the Kibbutz HaDati and Ne’emanei Torah V’Avodah.
