As the only religious Zionist peace organization of its kind, we are in a unique position to counter fundamentalist and extremist political arguments that have erroneously placed the value of the Land of Israel ahead of human life, justice, and peace -- concepts which have always been central to Jewish law and tradition.

Shabbat Weekend Seminar, More than 80 people attended a shabbaton at the Maale Hachamisha kibbutz hotel in the Jerusalem hills. The focus of the weekend was the religious peace movement's position in the Israeli political map. The elections were only a month away and we heard speakers form the Meretz and Am Echad parties as well as Meimad. On Shabbat itself there was a dvar tora from Prof. Uriel simon and a discussion with the lawyer Shamai Leibovitz.

This year we will be holding two events during Hol Hamo'ed Succot. One will be in English and will be held in the Succah of Mendel and Betsy Shapiro. The evening will focus on the ideology of Netivot Shalom and the evening's discussions will be followed by a fund-raising session. The nature of the other Succat Shalom has to still to be organised and suggestions are welcome.
After a long and at times violent season, we have suspended actvities over the summer and will restart during Succot. We feel that our presence is an important contribution to the atmosphere in the Jerusalem "street". As we look forward to renewing the Mishmar in the coming year, we are considering making changes in its format. Suggestions are welcome.
A new leaflet is being written to explain our ideologies and ideas. The leaflet will be mass-produced and hopefully will do much to advertise the importance of Netivot Shalom. Members are encouraged to make suggestions in regard to content and format.
A fledgling new Va'ad is being set up in the Gush Dan area to encourage activities outside Jerusalem. Those interested in participating, please ring David on 054 450723.
A group of members have approached us wanting to organise a weekend for those outside Jerusalem. More details soon.

Professor Uriel Simon's new book, "Bakesh Shalom Verodfehu" has just been published. The book raises questions about the firm hold that militeristic religiousity has in the public's perception by presenting an alternative set of values from the Tanach. Starting with the week of Parashat Shmot, we have been having a Mishmar Shalom every Friday. It takes place at 14:00 across from the Prime Minister's House (Kikar Paris) and consists of Tefilat Mincha and a Drasha on Parashat Ha-Shavuah.
This photo, of the previous week's Mishmar, appeared in the Jerusalem weekly newspaper "Kol Ha-ir" dated March 3, 2002.

The religious left-wing organization "Netivot Shalom" holds a demonstration by the the Prime Minister's house every Friday. In addition to signs protesting the occupation and the settlements, the participants pray "Mincha" together, and one of them gives a D'var Toarh. On last Friday, Yonatan Ben-Dov, one of the activists, spoke on the unhumanistic character of the Book of Esther. Naamah Baumgarten, spokesperson for the organization said, "We are collecting food items and before Pesach we will will distribute them in the village of Beit-Omer which is near Hebron". |
